Canelo Alvarez’s Defense For Positive Drug Test: Contaminated Meat

Earlier today Golden Boy Boxing Twitter sent out a promotional tweet reminding us all Canelo Alvarez-Gennady Golovkin II is just two months away:

Very exciting for those of us still interested in the fight game. But unfortunately Golden Boy killed their own buzz a couple hours later by revealing their boy, Canelo, had tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug called Clenbuterol. They are going with a “meat contamination” defense citing other fighters who have also tested positive for this substance.

Canelo says he was surprised about drug test revelation in a statement (via ESPN’s Dan Rafael):

“I am an athlete who respects the sport and this surprises me and bothers me because it had never happened to me,” Alvarez said in a statement. “I will submit to all the tests that require me to clarify this embarrassing situation and I trust that at the end the truth will prevail.”

Rafael’s report notes that both of the urine samples Canelo provided on Feb. 17 and 20 tested positive. He adds that it’s “unclear” if this news will affect the rematch scheduled for May 5.
