Watch Brandon Belt Work An Absurd 21-Pitch At-Bat

Brandon Belt singlehandedly ruined pace of play during today’s Giants-Angels game by stubbornly working a ridiculous 12-minute plus, 21-pitch at-bat against rookie pitcher Jaime Barria. The OBP fiend fouled off 16 pitches in the plate appearance before ultimately flying out to right fielder Kole Calhoun.

That’s right. All of that work for an out, undoubtedly something that will haunt Rob Manfred’s dreams tonight. You can watch a supercut of Belt torturing Barria in his spot start in the video below:

( function() {
var func = function() {
var iframe_form = document.getElementById(‘wpcom-iframe-form-4a8e03b36c149b3394aa83124f1aae53-5add143fbba33’);
var iframe = document.getElementById(‘wpcom-iframe-4a8e03b36c149b3394aa83124f1aae53-5add143fbba33’);
if ( iframe_form && iframe ) {
iframe_form.submit();
iframe.onload = function() {
iframe.contentWindow.postMessage( {
‘msg_type’: ‘poll_size’,
‘frame_id’: ‘wpcom-iframe-4a8e03b36c149b3394aa83124f1aae53-5add143fbba33’
}, window.location.protocol + ‘//wpcomwidgets.com’ );
}
}

// Autosize iframe
var funcSizeResponse = function( e ) {
var origin = document.createElement( ‘a’ );
origin.href = e.origin;

// Verify message origin
if ( ‘wpcomwidgets.com’ !== origin.host )
return;

// Verify message is in a format we expect
if ( ‘object’ !== typeof e.data || undefined === e.data.msg_type )
return;

switch ( e.data.msg_type ) {
case ‘poll_size:response’:
var iframe = document.getElementById( e.data._request.frame_id );

if ( iframe && ” === iframe.width )
iframe.width = ‘100%’;
if ( iframe && ” === iframe.height )
iframe.height = parseInt( e.data.height );

return;
default:
return;
}
}

if ( ‘function’ === typeof window.addEventListener ) {
window.addEventListener( ‘message’, funcSizeResponse, false );
} else if ( ‘function’ === typeof window.attachEvent ) {
window.attachEvent( ‘onmessage’, funcSizeResponse );
}
}
if (document.readyState === ‘complete’) { func.apply(); /* compat for infinite scroll */ }
else if ( document.addEventListener ) { document.addEventListener( ‘readystatechange’, function(){
if (document.readyState === ‘complete’) {
func.apply();
}
}, false ); }
else if ( document.attachEvent ) { document.attachEvent( ‘onreadystatechange’, func ); }
} )();

And here’s a visual of all the pitches Barria had to throw for that one out. You can see he was super committed to not walking Belt as he peppered pitches all over the middle of the zone:

In case you were wondering, Belt’s 21-pitch at-bat is a new record as it one-ups a 20-pitch tango Bartolo Colon and Ricky Gutierrez had back in the summer of 1998.

As for Barria, he lasted just two innings and surrendered two runs on five hits. He threw 77 pitches — 29 of them to Belt alone.

Brandon Belt had a pretty good week…
