If someone were to ask you, what is the most memorable thing you’ve found in your trash, I do not want to imagine it tbh, but feel free to share. I actually found my old sim card that contained telephone numbers of folks who I haven’t spoken to like in 10 years. Yes we have FaceBook blah blah, but this sim card was priceless to me as it had some very, very special telephone numbers if you know what I mean.
Back to the story, Reddit user u/vaultmaira posted this question under r/AskReddit: Garbagemen of reddit, what’s the most memorable thing you’ve found in the trash?, no one was expecting this love story to be shared by user u/deanjarois, it definitely caught our attention and the worlds.
The story goes as follows:
Not a garbage man, but my dad was before I was born.
He’s found old fishing lures, a Bulova watch, but most importantly…
My dad was the driver who had this one girl’s garbage route, and every time the girl would hear the truck she’d get all the last minute garbage from the house and take it out so she could get a good look at all the garbage men. And she was interested in my dad. She even scheduled her radiography classes AROUND trash collection day, just so she’d be home. When my dad noticed the trend, he’d often switch roles with one of the guys on the back of the truck so he could take the girl’s last minute garbage from her and toss it in. This went on for months. One day, the girl’s father locked her out of the house and said he wouldn’t let her back in until she gave her phone number to one of the garbage men. Coincidentally this was one day my dad was driving. She took the trash up to the guy on the back and she asked him, “Hey, is your driver seeing anyone?”
The guy yelled to my dad “Hey Keith, are you seeing anyone?!?!”
And this is how my dad found his most valuable treasure, my mom, in the garbage. They’ve been happily married for almost 26 years.
Further adding: Wow, everyone! Thanks for the silver and gold! My mom was so happy to hear that her love story made so many people on the internet smile. For clarification, yes, this is a true story. My mom was specifically interested in my dad, not all garbage men in general. And my mom’s parents knew it, so they decided to do something about it rather than go week after week watching her stalk the garbage men and never make a move. I agree, it is a great story, and it only got better. My dad used to write letters to her while he drove the truck, and they got married quickly. Since then, they made it through good times and bad. My dad came a long way since his Garbageman days, and has an excellent (and much less smelly) job. I consider myself so lucky to have parents like these two: twenty-six great years and hopefully another twenty-six or more to come.
Who said true love stories don’t exist, thanks for sharing this story with the world as these users on Reddit would agree:
